How to price tattoo services

Tattoo pricing is a mix of minimum shop charges, hourly rates, and custom design time. This calculator shows what each size and style should cost to cover your hourly rate, supplies, and booth or shop fees, then outputs a price sheet you can share with clients.

Size and placement
Placement affects difficulty. Ribs, hands, and necks take longer and carry more risk.
Style and detail
Realism, color packing, and fine line need more time per square inch than simple traditional work.
Design time
Custom drawing is unpaid time unless you charge for it. Many artists bill a design fee or require a deposit.
Shop minimum
A minimum charge covers setup, sterilization, and supplies for even the smallest piece.

The formula behind the calculator

Cost = (hours × your hourly pay) + supplies + travel. Price = cost × (1 + overhead) ÷ (1 − margin), rounded up to the nearest $5 (or $1 under $20). Add-ons skip the travel and setup charge, since they ride along with a main service. Every input is yours to change, so you can see exactly how each assumption moves your prices.

Frequently asked questions

How do tattoo artists set their prices?

Most combine an hourly rate with a minimum charge. Estimate the hours a piece will take, multiply by your rate, add supplies and design time, and set a minimum so small pieces are worth booking.

Should I charge for design time?

Yes, either as a separate fee or built into the price. Deposits protect against no-shows after you have already drawn the piece.

Do I need a tattoo consent form?

Yes, always. Requirements vary by state and local health department, so check your licensing authority. This tool prices work and does not provide legal forms.
