How to price handyman services

Handyman work is a stream of small jobs, which means drive time and setup can quietly eat your day. This calculator prices common tasks from your real time and materials, applies a minimum, and turns your rates into a handyman price list customers can understand at a glance.

Minimum charge
Small jobs still cost you travel and setup. A one-hour minimum is common.
Task time
Price common tasks as flat rates from your average time. Customers prefer flat prices to open-ended hourly billing.
Materials
Bill materials at cost plus a markup, or include them in flat prices for standard tasks.
Licensing limits
Some electrical, plumbing, and structural work requires a licensed contractor in many states. Know your local rules.

The formula behind the calculator

Cost = (hours × your hourly pay) + supplies + travel. Price = cost × (1 + overhead) ÷ (1 − margin), rounded up to the nearest $5 (or $1 under $20). Add-ons skip the travel and setup charge, since they ride along with a main service. Every input is yours to change, so you can see exactly how each assumption moves your prices.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a handyman charge?

Set an hourly target, convert common tasks into flat prices from your average time, add materials, travel, overhead, and margin, and always apply a minimum service charge.

Flat rate or hourly?

Flat rates for common tasks are easier to sell and reward speed. Use hourly pricing for unpredictable repair work.

Do handymen need a license?

It depends on your state and the job. Many states limit the dollar value or types of work an unlicensed handyman can do. Check your local rules.
